Along the way
To get to the Serengeti, you have to drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Karibu means welcome!
It is a huge caldera. Which is created when an entire mountain blows up and what is left is a very flat area with crater like walls, but the flat area is much larger than a crater. We are going into the flat area later in the week. This is a view down from the wall. Kind of like the Grand Canyon in the US. Quite immense.
The Maasai can live in the conservation area as it is not a National Park.
Not an uncommon site. Maasai children starting at age of 8 are required to tend to the herding
Bringing the firewood home
Look for the baby
This little guy hopped into one of our Safari Vehicles and stole our driver's sandwich. This occurred in less than 10 seconds. Then he took it out of the plastic and ate it. Notice the baby on his back.
Nothing like this in Iowa
And we enter the Serengeti
Thompson Gazelle checking us out
And some kind of bird
At a Hippo pool
And out of the water - no problem seeing these guys. How many can you see?
Was that seven? Two on far left.
And this chart shows how the migration affects the numbers of animals you can expect to see
And what we all wanted to see - our first Lion. They like to sit up high and look down. She was a long ways away.
And two more not far from her. A bit blurry as these were so far away.
These kinds of views I will always remember
With a really nice pool
My room was one of four in this building.
End of Day 2
