Today we drive from the Serengeti back to the Ngorongoro Conservation area with a visit to the Olduvai Gorge.
Slight hold-up with a flat tire - not surprising given the condition of the roads we drive. Each vehicle has two spares.
I guess, I am excited to get back on the road
and lots of Zebras
and a different Hyena
What the heck is going on here?
He was rolling around, apparently scratching his back.
And then there was a big meeting about that.
At Olduvai George Shaun with Ross - for once I look bigger than Shaun.
This lizard showed up to show off his colors
And the sun had this really interesting halo around it.
This describes Olduvai Gorge - bottom line, the first pre-humans started here.
They found these tracks and have preserved them by reburying them.
Just a nice view
Then we went to the Shifting Sands
This is a sand dune. It migrates about 17 meters a year. Sand that gets blown off the edge of the dune flies out only to carve a sharp turn in the air and boomerang back to the dune. The Sand has magnetic properties that help it stick together. As you drive on the dirt road towards it, you see ground plaques from 1969 on showing where it was at different years. The Maasai take care of it and you don't mess with guys that carry a stick and long knife.
We found this bug on the sands. Reminds me of the scarabs that you see in Indiana Jones movies or The Mummy. I wasn't going to touch it.
Surrounded by the Maasai we all pose for the mandatory picture.
